Ireland & Yuill

At Ireland & Yuill we definitely believe that prevention is better than cure. Follow these simple tips to help your smile last longer and shine brighter.

1/ Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss every day to ensure bacteria (plaque) trapped between your teeth and gums are removed, preventing gum disease/periodontal disease.

2/ Visit your dentist regularly – all patients should have a check-up every six months.

3/ Excessive sugar intake is one of the main causes of tooth decay so try to cut back on sugary snacks, especially two to three hours before going to bed.

4/ Don't rely on mouthwashes as an alternative to brushing and flossing – they do not clean the teeth.

5/ Use fluoride tablets to supplement the lack of fluoride in our drinking water. There is currently no fluoride in Scottish tapwater.

Case study
At Ireland & Yuill we feel it is important to highlight the issues which reinforce the importance of regular dental check-ups. Our case study examples serve as a reminder of the important role your dentist should play in your life.

Cancerous growthPreviously an Ireland & Yuill dentist spotted early signs of cancer in a patient during a routine six-monthly check-up. The dentist secured an emergency appointment with a specialist in oral medicine at Glasgow Dental Hospital and malignant melanoma was confirmed.

The patient was operated on at a Glasgow Maxillofacial hospital and the growth was removed successfully. The patient has since recovered but is checked regularly by ourselves and oral specialists. If the cancer had not been caught so quickly the patient could have been expected to die within six to nine months.

This case highlights the importance of regular dental checks. Ireland & Yuill's dentists have all been trained to detect the early signs of many potentially life-threatening illnesses. Visit regularly and let them look after you and your smile.
